The most popular room in our house is hands down the kitchen—it hasn’t always been this way, of course, I can remember when the play room and the family room were inhabited far more than anywhere else. But, now, we tend to cross paths, congregate and do most of our living, communicating and arguing in the kitchen.
I used to wonder what was wrong with our little family since in movies and stories and general family mythology—everything good happened in the kitchen. Now that my kids are nearly grown people, I find that the kitchen has become the hot-spot for most of the action (and, I must admit, most of the mess.) With four cooks (and more, if we’ve got guests over) constantly foraging for food, not to mention the centralized location of our kitchen and the fact that we sort mail, leave notes, and read the paper in the kitchen, I can’t remember the last time we settled into the living room for any sort of meaningful interaction!
My kitchen is one of those modern arrangements with a large, open counter facing into the dining and living areas and stools along the counter—this makes it easy for some folks to sit at the counter while someone else is cooking or unpacking groceries. With a nearby phone, mail-sorting center, and dining room table—it’s the perfect place to stage all sorts of family drama.
I’m interested to find out from others what the most popular room in their homes is? Has it changed over time like in our family or do you find your brood accumulates and congregates again and again in the same room of the house? Is it because of the layout of your house? The style of a particular room? Or the general priorities of your family? What is the most popular room in your house?
