The Multitasking Apple

apples This fall, stock up on inexpensive apples and make them work hard for you while they save you money. The key is get the apples as cheaply as possible and use them for more than one purpose or use as much of the apple as possible.

One of my favorite ways to do this is to get five or six large apples, and peel them, trying to make sure that I get a few good long peels in the process. I cut the apples and then place them in the crockpot with 1/4 cup of water, 1/4 cup of sugar and a half a stick of butter (1/4 cup). I mix and let the apples cook all day.

The crockpot apples do two things. They produce a wonderful desert, and they make the entire house smell wonderful! This eliminated the need for candles or air fresheners, as well as buying an apple pie. The apples can be served by themselves, over ice cream, or with a crumble topping that will turn them into a cobbler. For crumble topping, just mix a bit of flour with cinnamon and then cut in some cold butter. It can be added in the last 30 minutes of cooking.

Now, we still have those peels, right? Take them and hang them in the kitchen or from the window. They will serve as decorations while scenting the room. When fall is over, you can also hang them on the Christmas tree. Not bad. So many uses for just a few apples.

Take the idea of multitasking forward with other food ingredients in your home. Think of two or three ways that you can use something or use something that you might normally toss away, such as broccoli stalks. By getting creative and using your resources, you will always save money.
