This naturally occurring breed of cat along with its sister, the Siberian Longhair originated in Russia. It is considered the colour-pointed equivalent of the Siberian but it differs in type and is therefore technically a breed in itself. The Neva has only been known in Middle Europe since the fall of the “Iron Curtain.” All Nevas have “masques” and blue eyes. Their body hair is light with darker colors (points) in the colder body regions such as the face, ears, tails and legs. As with other semi-longhair breeds, the volume of fur depends upon the season, being much longer in winter and shorter in the summer. The tail, however, is full and luxurious all times of the year.
As the “children of nature,” these cats maintain their own fur. Theirs does not tend to mat, is easy to care for and doesn’t require the constant care and brushing of other longhaired breeds, such as the Persian and Himalayan. Brushing once a week or so is sufficient.
Nevas and Siberians often mate together and a pure Siberian mating can and often does result in litters with both Nevas and Siberians, provided that both cats are “point carriers.” Lovers of natural breeds welcome these litters because they provide the unique opportunity to unite a masque cat with a forest cat.
Neva cats are known for their wonderful characters and dispositions. They are the perfect companions for other animals and humans. They love to cuddle, and are very affectionate and gentle in nature. They are perfect pets in households with small children. Nevas do not speak often, but when they do, the meow is soft and almost musical. These cats have a lot to say to those who care to listen.
