Readers of this blog for a while will note my infatuation with technology. Our son also suffers the same affliction it seems. He is constantly wanting to touch they keyboard or the mouse. There are many reasons for this infatuation. One of the reasons he starting really enjoying touching the keyboard was when he discovered that the spacebar would pause any audio or video that happened to be playing on the computer at that moment. He would frantically hit the spacebar happily watching the computer try to keep up with his frantic actions. If, after a long session of hitting the keyboard, the sound and/or video was still paused he would turn lovingly to his parents and sign for “more.” This became a game for him. Eventually his physical enthusiasms were to much for humble technology to take and one of our computers gave up the ghost.
Recently I ordered a new keyboard. There were at least two reasons for the order. The first was frustration with batteries and connection lag with a bluetooth keyboard. Second was wrist pain associated with spending long stretches at the keyboard typing creative, academic, and/or professional material. When the box came to our door no one was more excited than our son. He’d learned his lesson from this past Christmas: boxes are to be opened. When he saw the picture of a keyboard he became very excited. For the past couple of days he’s been happily pounding on the new keyboard while I’m not looking. Oh well. No one is perfect. Our sincere hope is that he won’t be able to break the new keyboard. At any rate — I know we’ve created a child with a big interest in technology. When a new piece comes in the mail (even something as simple as a keyboard) his eyes light up.
