The Opposite of a Snow Day

One advantage of homeschooling is no snow days. Now that may not seem like an advantage upon first reading it, at least to the kids. However, not having snow days or designated holidays can prove to be quite an advantage for both the parent and the child.

In my house we do not take the same days off as public school. We also pay no attention to snow days. In fact, snow days are a day to work hard and get even more work done. If we did not do extra school work on a snow day there would be nothing to do. While school kids are happy having a day to sit around watching TV or playing video games, my kids are catching up or getting ahead on their work. We take part in the opposite of snow days. Since snow does not prevent us from getting to the classroom we have the advantage of taking nice days off. We will plan many of our vacation days around the weather. Where I live a warm sunny day cannot always be counted on so we take full advantage of nice days. Those are the days for ditching the textbooks and computers for a park, a field trip, or going for ice cream. In the winter we take our snow days when the weather is perfect for making snowmen or going sledding. Icy and blizzard weather keep us inside and bound to our books and computers.

Another time we take advantage of scheduling our own days off is holiday and weekends. I am not afraid to have Saturday school. If Saturday is rainy, snowy, or we took a day off during the week, we will make up for it on Saturday. We only take main holidays off or those days my husband has off of work. So, you may find us working on certain holidays that the public school observes. We will take our holiday as it fits into my husband’s vacation schedule, nice weather, or as we feel the need.
