Anniversary presents can cause trouble, especially if they’re not what the person was expecting or hoping for.
In a magazine I had to chuckle as I read about a woman who was delighted by her husband’s suggestion of a gift subscription to GoodReading magazine.
She went on to explain two reasons why his gift was so appreciated. The first was because in the past his presents for special occasions left a lot to be desired. In fact the editor of the magazine had to censor her comments in the letter which gives a pretty fair idea of what she thought of the gifts.
Although I haven’t ever had too many disasters from my husband, I have heard of and seen examples where the husband has completely missed the mark. I wonder if it occurs with wives as much. Guys, maybe you want to tell us about that!
Of course you could always do the thing of dropping heavy hints when it’s coming near anniversary time about things you see in catalogue on in the shops while out with your spouse. But men can at times be totally oblivious to hints unless they’re ultra obvious. The guys might have something to say about whether we women are too.
Sometimes I’ve done the hint bit, but more often I’m happy to trust Mick’s judgment. He knows me well enough to know what I like and would never dream of giving me an appliance or something for the house…. unless it was another owl to add to my collection.
The second reason the woman appreciated the gift subscription was beautiful. She said she owed her love of reading now to him. A struggling reader when younger, her husband was the one who turned her on to books and to reading through his love of them. As he talked about books he’d read his passion for them came through and introduced her to a world of characters she’d never met and books she hadn’t read, like Wuthering Heights, To Kill Mockingbird, etc so that now she is a book lover. What a wonderful gift to give someone you love!
