There was one issue in particular that dominated this week in the Pets Blog –dogfighting! Both Aimee and myself had plenty to say on that issue. But we covered other things as well. To find out what, consult your week-at-a-glance breakdown below.
Monday, July 23
Aimee wrote about a group in Pennsylvania called Dogs Deserve Better. They’re trying to raise awareness about the cruelty and dangers of chaining via an event called Unchain the Fifty, where they try to get one person in each state to spend a minimum of eight hours chained to a doghouse.
Tuesday, July 24
There was more “Bad Newz” for Michael Vick (with hopefully more to come) this week. Thousands of people backed PETA, HSUS, and ASPCA campaigns to get Nike and the NFL to suspend Vick’s contracts. Aimee wrote about another concern in ethical dog treatment –puppy mills– and how legislators are waging war on them.
Wednesday, July 25
Murphy’s back from his Smoky Mountain Getaway with tales to tell, which were shared in Murphy’s Gatlinburg Getaway Part I: The Holiday Inn and Doggywood and Murphy’s Gatlinburg Getaway Part II: The Smoky Mountain Doghouse and Patriot Park. All was not well in the Amodio household this day. Aimee, Lally and Moose all got sick at the same time, which led to a messy Wednesday. Aimee also provided stats to support the fact that shelters are overwhelmed with fighting dogs at the moment but also offered examples of how we can all help.
Thursday, July 26
In What is BSL? Aimee examined the laws and breeds of dogs affected by “breed specific legislation.”
Friday, July 27
Aimee wrote about how the recent spotlight on the world of using dogs to fight for sport has made its way to Capitol Hill and congress condemns dogfighting.
Saturday, July 28
Michael Vick learns that animal lovers are a force to be reckoned with when Nike, Reebok and even a trading card company couldn’t ignore the emails of outrage flooding their mailboxes and suspended his contracts. Aimee addressed the fact that there have to be alternatives to BSL since legislation alone won’t reduce the number of dog bites and attacks.
Sunday, July 29
Aimee asked “Do you know what dogfighting is?” It’s been all over the news recently, but do you know just all that it entails? If not, Aimee’s article will clue you in.
