One of my motivations for “going solo” and building a home business is that I’d like to work towards making a world where I can go anywhere and my work and income won’t be tied to an actual location. My home business is not so much about “home” as it is about NOT being at an office or a specific location that I have to be at every day. I’d like to be able to work from anywhere!
With three high-school-age teenagers, I’m looking forward to a few years from now (3 ½ to be exact) when I won’t HAVE to stay in the same home and the same neighborhood if I don’t want to. While I’m well aware that my parenting days will not be over when the last offspring finishes public school—I do anticipate having somewhat more freedom to move if I’d like, travel more, and broaden my horizons a bit. My goal is to have my income tied to me—not to a specific employer or building.
Living in the modern age of computer, internet and FAX machine has really created a world where I can truly work anywhere if I choose. Building my freelance and independent business is about my learning how to do that. Since I don’t really envision retirement and I don’t have any spouse or partner to fall back on—it’s up to me to figure out how to generate, build and maintain revenue and have the mobility and freedom I’m craving.
I realize that my motivation for entrepreneurialism is not the same as everyone’s. Since my kids are older, I’m not really feeling the need to be available for child care and errand-running. I also don’t ever foresee trying to build a bricks and mortar type business where I’ll have an office or building to go to—I want to work from home and be as portable and efficient as possible (with the lowest overhead possible). My mid-career goal is truly to build the fluid, portable career!
