Do you have a good relationship with your neighbors? Most of us these days don’t even know much about our neighbors, let alone have a close bond with them. If you can forge a friendship with your neighbors though, it will pay off in many ways.
This was especially true for us this weekend. We are dealing with a situation at home that is taking a lot of time, and our neighbors have really come through. From baby sitting to helping to clear our driveway, we have greatly benefitted from having them in our lives.
Here are some ways that neighbors can be powerful allies to your own household.
Sharing equipment and resources
We have a snow blower that we are willing to share with our neighbors. This saves them the expensive of having to purchase one. On the other hand, our neighbor helped us to fell a particularly ornery tree in our yard. Having the extra hand helped avoid injury and damage.
School bus duty
What happens if you are running late or need to leave for work early? If you have neighbors with kids at the school bus stop, they can help out. Some neighbors trade this task on a regular basis, taking turns depending on the day of the week.
Offering support
When you have a change in your life, such as a new baby or an illness, neighbors will often step in to deliver meals and provide other support. Having friends close by can be a real blessing.
Being advocates
Is there a bylaw in your development or community that needs to be changed? Talk with your neighbors. It might be something that they are interested in supporting as well.
Carpooling
By getting to know your neighbors, you may be able to share carpooling. You can carpool to work, for shopping or for the kid’s activities. Carpooling will save money and stress.
