One thing that parenthood has taught me is to expect the unexpected. Just because I think I’ve seen it all, does not mean I have. In fact, as soon as I get a little cocky about how seasoned I am as a veteran parent, life hands me some amazing little surprises. Some of these surprises are anything but fun, but others add a little sparkle to my life.
I’ve written before about my eldest daughter’s prom this spring. This is our first prom so I am into commemorating the adventure. I found out yesterday, however, that there have been some changes in the upcoming plans (with the prom two weeks ago). Boyfriend one is out (we knew this a week or so ago, but they were still going to go to the prom together) and Boyfriend number two has come onto the scene. Now, my daughter has organized a meeting between the three of them to see just who will be going to the prom with whom.
Oh my. My daughter is an incredibly practical, grounded person. That’s part of what makes the “date” change so interesting. She’s the last person on earth you’d expect to have such prom drama. However, her approach is in keeping with her earthy self and she’s just called a meeting. No tears or numerous phone calls to friends and others in the circle—just, “let’s sit down and figure this thing out.”
Well, I’m staying out of it. After all, she is seventeen and perfectly capable of handling such things. Meanwhile, my job is to make alterations to the dress and help her find just the right color and style of stockings. I think that is perfect for me. And, as “mother of the prom” just about all I think I can handle. I’m eager to see, however, just exactly who (or how many who’s) she actually goes with to the prom…
