The Proof of Love

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!!! Normally my wife and I avoid this holiday like the plague. It is far too sickeningly sweet and filled with faux intentions and proclamations for us to put a great deal of effort into the day itself. This Valentine’s Day, though, we decided to have a good time at home, with each other, and not be too concerned about the hustle and bustle of restaurants, shopping centers, and other items covered in paper red or glossy pink hearts. We realized that we had what I’ll call a “proof of love” built into our day already.

What is the most visible sign of love? Are the wedding rings the best sign? Sure, my wife gets nervous if she isn’t wearing hers (or I’m not wearing mine) because that ring sends a signal. It is a sign for something greater than itself. It is not, however, the rings.

Perhaps it is the flowers and the candy? It must be the singular red rose given as a sign of deep, deep love; the dark of the chocolate symbolizing the unexplored depths waiting to be uncovered for the remainder of a life. Alas, again, no. A teddy bear! It MUST be a teddy bear! Again, no.

The “proof of love” kept my wife and I up last night (her more than me). He greeted us with a smile in the morning and kept us at home, together, for a lovely day. Our “proof of love” is our son. He is ever present, ever loving, and ever loved. He is the most visible sign of our commitment to one another. Our lives revolve around him, necessarily, and we are consequently always in each other’s orbits. We are a singular unit united by love.

Today was a wonderful day. It was not without gifts and cards but was more prominently focused on family and food and fun. I hope you all had a wonderful Valentine’s Day too. My best to you.
