A few nights ago I was having a bedtime chat with my eldest son. You know, the chats which fall under the category of “stalling because I don’t want to sleep yet”? We were talking about traveling and how there were many places around the world that my husband and I hope to take the boys over the coming years, and how the first place on my list is Disney World.
After establishing that yes, that is where Mickey Mouse and his friends lived, he wanted to know where it was and I said it was in America – a long plane ride away. He’s been on planes since he was 4.5 months old so this wasn’t so exciting to him, until I explained how big these transatlantic planes are, and that they show movies, have their own radio shows and serve meals – then it sounded more like an adventure he wanted to have!
Next he wanted to know why it’s first on my list of places I want to take them. It’s a reasonable question to ask but I had to think about it, because although it would be easy to say “because it’s fun” – but it’s more than that. Disney World is a great place, there’s no denying that, but underneath the fun is something more important. It’s one man’s dream. A man who at one time in his life had been 6 years old, just like my son is now, had a dream – and that dream turned into the world’s best vacation destination. In simple terms I explained to Jake that anything in life was possible. If he could dream it, and persistently worked towards achieving that dream, one day it would be his – and that’s the greatest lesson that Disney World has to offer anyone, and why it puts Disney World first on my list of places I want his little brother and him to visit.
I asked if he understood. He nodded. Encouraged, I asked if he had any questions. Looking at me with a very serious expression he asked “So does Donald Duck live there as well?”
