What is it about shoes? I think next to a new hair cut, getting a new pair of shoes can be rejuvenating, healing, and therapeutic–not to mention it can just be the thing to lift a person out of depression and back into the world. Even children benefit from a new pair of shoes…
The other day, I was having lunch with an old friend at a lovely little café–we were talking about the challenges of having nearly grown children and comparing memories of when our children were much younger. The young son of the owner was playing nearby and when he came by our table, I commented on his new shoes. The four-year-old’s face lit up as he asked me if I new who they were? As I started to answer, he jumped and nearly burst; “They’re Lightning McQuee!” he danced. And, yes, his “Lightening McQueen” shoes (from the animated movie “Cars”) were quite the accessory! They made him faster, stronger, and more invincible–everything a person wants from a great pair of shoes.
Heartache, grief, a sense of failure or frustration–all of these life conditions may not be cured with a new pair of shoes, but they can be alleviated for a while and a great new pair of shoes can help along the road to healing. I don’t know whether it is because we walk on them, they help us get where we’re going, or because we can see them with every step we take–but looking down and seeing and feeling that new pair of shoes can be the first step in moving out of one condition and into the future. Keep in mind that while “stuff” does not take the place of empathy, understanding and personal growth, a new pair of shoes can be just what you or your child need to start you on the path!
