Many local scrapbook stores around the United States, plan and host garage sales a couple of times a year. Often there is one in the Spring and one in the Fall, but some will just do one in the Summer months. Does your scrapbook store do one?
There has been a large amount of controversy surrounding garage sales hosted by scrapbook stores. Why? Because there is a strong belief by many that they lose a lot of money, and time when paying someone to sell their items. And then, in the same breath, there are a lot of people who think that getting the extra cash is wonderful, because it allows them to buy new things.
Most scrapbookers who have been scrapbooking for awhile have more than likely accumulated a large amount of supplies. Are you really going to use all of that? For many, the answer is a firm no. These are the gals that are looking into the whole local scrapbook store garage sale concept.
At this point, there is not a wrong or right answer, in whether they are a good idea or not.
Many stores charge an approximate $5.00 fee to put yourself into their sale. They sell it for you and you get the profit. The problem and the debate often comes from how you are paid. Some scrapbook stores will give you a gift card or store credit to be used in their store. This is great if you are in the need of some new items. But the other side of the token is, that many scrapbookers are trying to clean, purge, and get rid of their large amount of stash and get more organized.
These are the scrapbookers who would prefer their payment in cash or a check format.
I am not sure I have an opinion either way, honestly. I have participated a few years ago in one, and was satisfied with my substantial $156 gift card I got. I did spend it in the local scrapbook store and was happy. Would it have been better to have the cash? Probably. But I am not complaining.
