The Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to the Rescue (1998)

Sixteen years after the release of the original, “The Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to the Rescue” made its appearance on the children’s movie market. Timmy, the sickly child from the first film, is now healthy and a little bit older. Nicodemus, the prophet leader of the rats, prophesied that someday, Timmy would save them all from NIMH again, and now it’s time for Timmy to prepare for his destiny. He’s going to Thorn Valley, where the rats of NIMH have resettled, to go to school and be taught by Mr. Ages and Justin personally. His brother Martin is jealous – why should Timmy get all the attention? Martin’s older, he’s bigger, and stronger. Why is Timmy the child of the prophesy?

Timmy flies off to Thorn Valley on the back of Jeremy, the bumbling crow we met in the original movie, and begins his schooling. He has a clever engineering mind and after a while is able to catch on to the training program Justin has outlined for him. Years pass, and Timmy is now a young adult, ready to face whatever his destiny holds for him.

One night while out on a scavenging mission, Timmy encounters a young lady mouse named Jenny. She has come to find the rats and ask them to help her – her parents were amongst those who escaped from NIMH in the first place, but they were recaptured. Dr. Valentine, the head of NIMH, has some sort of terrible experiment planned on the night of the full moon and Jenny wants the rats to come help her out, but Mr. Ages is worried that the outside world will find out about Thorn Valley and they won’t be safe anymore. He tells her that they can’t help, but Timmy decides to go along, especially when he finds out that his brother Martin has been captured by NIMH.

Timmy and Jenny, with the help of Jeremy, fly off to NIHM, to find that Martin isn’t a prisoner – he’s become one of the leaders of NIMH, and has somehow picked up a British accent at the same time. He tries to get Timmy to join him, but Timmy refuses. When Justin decides to come help them, they must all work together to escape their fate.

This movie is a little bit violent, as Dr. Valentine is practicing electric shock on the animals, and it may disturb a sensitive viewer. However, my children are sitting here right now, telling me that they aren’t scared at all. Maybe I’m more skittish than my own children?

Dom DeLuise reprises the role of Jeremy, and Ralph Macchio voices Tim in this rated G film.
