I admit, I have wanted a “Sneaky Chef” cookbook for awhile now. Ever since she came out with her first cookbook geared towards kids. I have to say that it was Libby that dubbed the moniker “The Sneaky Mama” and it was long before The Sneaky Chef cookbooks came out. But what can I say? Great minds think alike and while I don’t share any of the same recipes (nor have I published them into a cookbook), I wholeheartedly endorse hiding healthy food into food my family finds palatable.
I can hide almost anything, and not even hide it that well, in my kids’ food. They eat it up and are never the wiser. My spouse, on the other hand, has an equally strong distaste for vegetables and a much more discerning palate. So when I saw The Sneaky Chef: How to Cheat on Your Man (In the Kitchen), at my favorite book store in downtown Manhattan, I knew I had to get it.
Some Things I Like About This Book:
I love the premise of sneaking healthy food into your diet. The author makes it easy too by including a whole section with the recipes of the different purees that you can sneak into your food. And no, you cannot tell that there are blueberries in your chocolate cake or cauliflower in your mac ‘n cheese. While it might not taste exactly the same, it is delicious and your family will still eat it.
Some Things I Don’t Like About This Book:
There is too much writing. There is a reason for that, but generally when I buy a cookbook, I don’t want the author’s opinion on food–I just want to make the food. That is however, just my opinion and for someone else who is really trying to turn over a new leaf in the nutrition department–you may really appreciate the thorough explanations.
This cookbook is really one step towards changing your family towards a healthier lifestyle. So it thoroughly explains why she’s included certain purees, what benefits they have and how to hide them the best. Not for me, but not bad either.
I highly recommend this book for anyone that is looking to get a handle on their family’s nutrition, and for all you moms out there who are married to people who reject vegetables in plain form.
