The Soap Opera Marriage

Even if you don’t watch them you can’t help but see ads for them. I’m not a fan of most of these types of shows. Even if I don’t watch them, it doesn’t stop me seeing the ads and promos for them as I’m changing channels, and from there it’s possible to get a pretty good idea of what is going on and what the show is about. I’m talking about soap operas. Or soapies as they are affectionately known. My question today is this: Is your marriage a soap opera marriage?

I have Mick to thank for this description as we were talking about my alphabetical marriage blog tips and he suggested this for S. Isn’t he a gem? So what did he mean by a soap opera marriage?

Several things stand out in these types of shows. The soap opera marriage is shallow and superficial. It often involves a husband or wife who is a workaholic or a husband or wife having an affair, largely because they are not getting the attention they require at home. The result is that some of the characters change partners more often than a man changes his socks. This need for affairs is often caused by an element of selfishness and being self absorbed.

The other point about the soap opera is they are often highly dramatic with explosive and revealing arguments and people who can’t keep a secret. They are littered by controlling people, focused on what they want. Watch any episode of say, Brothers and Sisters and you will see all the things I have mentioned in play. It’s a formula that TV producers have obviously decided works for television as evidenced by how long some of these shows have been running It’s not a formula that works for marriage.

A successful, happy, lasting marriage needs to be built on something more. It needs to be built on the qualities like love, respect, appreciation, putting the other person first and all the positive qualities we have been talking about.
