The Star of Christmas (2002)

veggiesBob the Tomato stars as Cavis Appythart and Larry the Cucumber as Millward Phelps in this Christmas movie by the creators of VeggieTales. Cavis and Millward are hopeful British composers, somewhat after the style of Gilbert and Sullivan, who are trying to make it big with their production, “The Princess and the Plumber.” They’ve asked Miss Effie Pickering (Madame Blueberry) to head up their cast, and now they need a big show stopper, a main attraction. If they don’t get a good crowd, their entire dream will go up in smoke and they won’t be able to pay for all the costumes they got on credit. With their brains churning, they know they have to come up with the world’s most brilliant idea to pull it off.

Meanwhile, down the street, Reverend Gilbert (Dad Asparagus) is preparing the church for the Christmas Eve pageant. Edmund, his son (Junior Asparagus) has put a lot of work into the production and they are going to unveil a priceless religious artifact – The Star of Christmas! All their parishioners are planning to attend, making it the most talked-about Christmas pageant ever.

There is just one problem. “The Princess and the Plumber” and the Christmas pageant are scheduled for the same night, Christmas Eve. While Cavis is sure that their play will teach London how to love, he and Millward aren’t so sure that they’ll get the attendance they need to pull their finances out of the fire. So they hit on a scheme – they will steal the star and ruin the church’s pageant.

I have yet to decide just how I feel about this video. It’s certainly not one of VeggieTale’s best and not even near one of my favorites. I think I’ll say that it’s a pleasant show, but not one of those that will linger in your mind for more than thirty seconds or so. Your children will probably enjoy it, as it does contain lots of silliness, but that silliness might be a bit much for the parents. You watch it and decide, and then let me know what you think.
