The Style of Tile: Stone Tile

If you are thinking about using tile in your home, you are probably wondering exactly what type of tile it is that you want and need. There are so many choices of tile, and some varieties are better used in certain areas of your home and in certain applications than other forms of tile. Knowing what to use and when can be confusing.

While looking at tile, you may have heard a number of different terms, such as penny round, mosaic, textured, etc. What do they all mean? Let us start with the basics of tile to give us a good foundation for getting started.

I’ll go through the main types of tile: glass, ceramic and stone, and give you the pros and cons of each to help you make the right decision for your home.

Stone Tile

Stone tile is the choice if you want the best tile in your home. It is virtually indestructible, so it can be used practically anywhere, including walls and floors. It will last for decades without a problem. Not only that, but stone tile ages so beautifully if it is properly maintained.

Stone tile comes in several different types, and each type itself comes in a variety of colors, finishes and formats, making it easy to find stone tile that fits in with your own design and style. You can find stone tile in marble, granite, travertine, limestone and slate.

It is considered a thing of luxury, and polished stone can be stunning in its appearance.

The downside to stone tile is that it is reactive and certain types will stain easily if it is not regularly cleaned and sealed. It can also feel cold when you touch it.
