Every Sunday morning we are usually in such a rush to get to church that by the time we arrive, songs have already broken out and I don’t take the opportunity to read my bulletin. Sometimes my bulletin serves as a coaster for my tea and becomes an object for sermon notes and, I admit, doodling. Since our pastor usually makes announcements of upcoming events from the pulpit, I typically don’t think to look through the bulletin since our church also has a website should I become forgetful about a specific event date.
When visiting a church for the first time, I always enjoy going through their bulletin because it’s an opportunity to learn what that church is about and what they have to offer. Do you really know about all the exciting things your church has to offer?
I just got to thinking today while looking at this week’s bulletin about all the work that has gone into it. People have lovingly devoted their time to include resources, welcome notes, calendars and summaries of classes provided to help us grow in our faith. Many church bulletins contain scriptures, hymns, prayer needs, exciting reports, and requests for volunteers.
I encourage you this Sunday when at church to take the time and look through your bulletin. You might find an opportunity to join a group or class where you can meet other Christians and grow in your walk. Perhaps too you could pray about where God would have you be a blessing in your church. I found some great opportunities for my husband and me to attend evening classes that provide free childcare. Not only do we get a couple hours without the kids, but have an opportunity to learn in class together. I didn’t realize all the things that were happening in our church. Our pastor just didn’t have the time to share each and every event before the sermon.
