“The Super Bowl Shuffle”

Dig out your spandex—the “Super Bowl Shuffle” is back! I may be dating myself, but the truth must be told: when I was in high school my friends and I did busta move to the 80s hit. Members of the Chicago Bears football team recorded the song in 1985. It sold more than 500,000 singles and reached No. 41 on the music charts.

Now, the cheeky little ditty has fans shuffling again as this year’s team prepares for tomorrow’s Super Bowl. According to Chicago radio stations, the “Shuffle” is the most requested tune on the air. It can also be heard booming from area bars and nightclubs.

But, that’s not all—–Bears’ fans are also snapping up DVDs of the music video made with the song. One company selling “Shuffle” DVDs online said it sold 30,000 copies this month alone. That compares to 25,000 in all of 2006.

No doubt the song will be blaring at Super Bowl parties around the Chicagoland area tomorrow. Perhaps the song will help the Bears and history will repeat itself. After all, when it was time to shuffle on the field, the ’85 Bears got the job done by trouncing the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, 46-1.

If you don’t remember the “Super Bowl Shuffle,” don’t feel bad. You join hundreds of students on the campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology. The co-eds are part of a class (mainly offered to international students), which teaches the finer points of the American version of football.

“The people over here are crazy about the Bears,” a “Football 101” student told a local news reporter. “We over there are crazy about the Indian cricket team.”

In class the students learn the rules of the gridiron as well as some football trivia, including how much the ball weighs. The answer: between 14 to 15 ounces. The class is also converting some students into Bears fans. Hey, it’s not everyday you’re assigned to watch the Super Bowl.
