The Take-Away Experience

Some people ought never to be let near the public. I’m sure most of you will know what I mean and have encountered at least one of these people over time in shops.

I mean the person who either ignores you when you go into a takeaway food shop and keeps chatting on the phone or talking to someone else that it is plainly not a customer. Or maybe it’s the person who gives you such a sour, grumpy look when they ask for your order.

We had this experience recently in a takeaway food store. We waited and waited. No-one came to attend to us. Then the woman bustled past with a sour look on her face as she delivered other meals. A smile and a pleasant,’ be with you in a moment’ wouldn’t have gone astray, even though the place wasn’t that busy. The result was she lost business.

Given her rudeness at that point we decided to get our food elsewhere. We walked out and went in to another shop further along.

The man was obviously busy but stopped long enough to say ‘Won’t be a sec.’

‘Now worries,’ we answered.

When he’d finished the order he was working on, he came over and with a smile took our order.

Recently family had gone to get takeaway food at another shop. They cooked the fish and chips first, then sat them waiting while the hamburgers cooked. As a result the fish and chips were soggy and half cold by the time the hamburgers were ready. This man did not do that.

He made sure he put my fish on to grill and Mick’s bacon and egg roil and timed everything so it was all ready together. He included little things like serviettes, pepper and salt sachets, and plastic cutlery and made sure chips were in a separate container to the fish so the chips were till crisp and not soggy. Little touches, but they made all the world of difference and all delivered with a smile. Next time we go for take-way, which place do you think we’ll go to?
