This week, I’m dog-sitting for the wonderful wiggle-pup Casey. Okay, I can’t really call her a puppy anymore — she’ll be two this year! But in my mind, she’ll always be the little puppy who I could carry around in one arm.
Casey’s human parents headed off to Florida on Monday, and will be back on Saturday… so I’m in the home stretch of the Three Dog Circus. It hasn’t been too bad — lucky for all of us, it’s only rained one day this week, and that was yesterday. The other days have been warm and sunny and perfect for romping in the yard.
Moose and Lally get along reasonably well with Casey, with two exceptions: Casey doesn’t quite know how to get them to play with her, so she barks in their faces. Lally isn’t too pleased about that. The other problem is that Casey doesn’t quite settle down and sleep when she’s here. In order for Casey AND Moose and Lally to get a chance to rest, I’ve been spending the night at Casey’s house and Moose and Lally stay home. I don’t mind camping out on the couch with Casey, but I definitely don’t feel as rested as I do when I sleep in my own bed.
Today, all I wanted was a half hour (or more) to nap. So, I thought I would hand out rawhides and pull a blanket over my head while everyone chewed.
Me and my big ideas.
I didn’t have three of the same kind of anything. I had two beef basted rawhides and two teeth-cleaning chews (similar to Greenies but not green). I figured I’d dole out the treats in order of arrival. Lally joined the family first, so she got first pick. I offered her one of each treat, and she took the teeth-cleaning chew. Moose came second, so I offered him the same choice. He took the other teeth-cleaning chew. Casey took one of the beef basted rawhides.
Less than five minutes later, Moose came back. I think he buried his treat, so I gave him the other rawhide. He buried that one, too. Lally ate half of her treat and abandoned it, so Casey grabbed it and finished it. Then we were down to one rawhide for three dogs.
Moose decided he’d rather snooze on the deck after all that hard work burying treats, so Lally and Casey faced off. Casey ended up doing most of the work on the rawhide, but Lally snagged it and finished it off.
And me? I got to doze for ten minutes in between bouts of chew-kidnapping, romping, and barking.
