The Toddler and Harry Potter

This past weekend the ABC Family channel aired a Harry Potter marathon. I hadn’t seen the movies in a while, so I was excited. I was so exhausted when Chris and I tried to watch Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on DVD that I fell asleep. I was really looking forward to seeing the first five films again.

I hadn’t introduced the movies to my toddler yet. I didn’t know how she’d do with the unusual characters, action, and volume. When I nannied a two-year-old boy, I was apologetic to his parents for bringing Monsters, Inc. and Ice Age for him to watch because those movies were rated PG. He loved them and his parents appreciated my concern but were fine with the movies. The little boy loved them.

I never know how much attention Jessie is going to pay to anything that comes on TV. She usually wants to be up and playing instead of sitting still and watching. So when the syndicated family sitcom ended and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone started I didn’t change channels. Jessie was enthralled. The last time she had that kind of reaction was when Shrek came on TV. We had the nicest time sitting on the couch together and enjoying the movie. I was delighted to share the movie with her and thought, not for the first time, how I’m looking forward to sharing the books with her too.

We were watching the movie on Thursday night. As much as I wanted to let Jessie watch the whole movie she had to go to bed for school the next day. I promised her that we’d watch the DVDs.

We missed our window of opportunity. I got out the first DVD and she could not have cared less. We’ll try again another time.
