Although many homes have an additional bedroom that serves as an occasional repose for weary guests, many homes do not. What they do have is an unused space that has become a catchall storage area for clutter and other things unwanted. The key is adaptability in a hurry, for like all species known to man, guests and the rooms they sleep in will survive the Ice Age also known as an annual, perfunctory visit. Here are some hopefully helpful tips to transform any room into a make shift guest boudoir that even the likes of Conrad Hilton might have approved of.
If the room in question doubles as an office, playroom or hobby area, provide plenty of closed and organized storage, so papers and other paraphernalia (airplane wings, puzzle pieces, your nasty in-laws etc) are quickly and neatly stashed away when guests invade your sanctuary.
Invest in an over-the-door-hook rack if your closets are bursting to come up for some air. Rather than expose your guests to foraging for a place to hang things, these sturdy, plastic coated steel racks, which cost about 25 bucks in mail order catalogues, can hold about a dozen garments without interfering with the door closing. Whatever beasts or skeletons lay hidden in your closet may remain there undisturbed. (Tell Jimmy Hoffa it’s time to come home.)
Let your beds and sofas lead double lives. No subterfuge, forged passports or identity theft here; merely turn a twin bed by night into a sofa by day by pushing the long end against the wall, propping the pillows into back cushions and covering it all with a tailored bedspread and attractive pillow shams. Consider buying a pull-down bed if space is at a premium. They are of the “now you see them, now you don’t” variety, making it nice for magicians who are too busy pulling rabbits out of hats to stay at your house very long. Seriously, these beds take up about eight inches of wall space by day and fold down into a full; sized bed by night.
So consider these tips and then…forget about it. Do you really want guests in your house or would you rather just walk around naked and then go to sleep?
