The Treasures That Fill Your Home

Housekeeping

You’re such a “Bah Humbug,” my daughter said to me with a chuckle.  Here it was the day after Christmas and she had woken up to a house put back together.

That’s right.  The lights were taken down from the windows.  The Christmas tree was packed up and there was no sign that decorations had ever filled the rooms.

I’m really not a Scrooge.  I love Christmas.  I treasure this time of year.  And I enjoy decorating my home.

But I am so much more comfortable when everything is normal.  My normal means the many picture frames that decorate the living and dining room areas, along with candles and scrapbooks.

I am also much more comfortable sitting amidst my favorite colors—cranberry and various shades of brown.  It’s homey to me.

In keeping a home, I believe it’s so important to make it a sanctuary.  It should be a place where you can unwind and leave the troubles of this world behind.

You should be able to walk through your front door and feel instantaneous relief.  Ah, you are finally home!

Housekeeping is about more than keeping the crumbs off the floor.  It’s the grounds in which your family gathers and memories are created.

And this year it means so much more to me than ever before, with my oldest son being home from the Air Force.  Funny how taking the time to scrub every nook and cranny hasn’t even been a thought in my mind the past several days.

Although I believe it’s important to keep my home clean, orderly and organized, it should never take precedence over what happens inside it.  The building of relationships, the time spent together and the creation of moments (both good and bad).

Tips and ideas on how to keep a clean house are great.  But don’t neglect to take care of the treasures that fill your home…your family.
