The Ugly Dachshund (1966)

reewIn addition to producing countless animated classics over the years, Disney has produced many great live action films, as well. One of these, a classic, is called “The Ugly Dachshund” and stars Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette as married couple Mark and Fran Garrison.

Fran has a champion Dachshund named Danke, a spoiled little doggie who only gets the best food, bed, and overall royal treatment. Well, that’s what you have to do to raise a champion, and now Fran is delighted to learn that Danke is having puppies. She’ll be able to raise those puppies to be champions as well, and she’s already got visions of blue ribbons in her head.

Mark, on the other hand, is tired of all this sissy doggie stuff. He wants a real dog, a man’s dog. Something big and ferocious, an animal he could take with him on hunting trips and be proud. Something like a Great Dane, for instance.

When Dr. Pruitt, Danke’s veterinarian, asks Mark to take home a baby Great Dane who is in need of nourishment, how can Mark say no? Poor thing was abandoned by his mother as a puppy and needs milk to survive. Surely Danke won’t mind taking care of this little pup along with her own. But Fran has issues with her prize-winning pooch associating with such a common animal, and things are compounded when Brutus (that’s a nice manly-sounding doggie name, right?) starts to think himself a Dachshund and wants to sit on Mark’s lap.

Mark has to bend over backwards to prove to Fran that Brutus is worth keeping, and when Brutus ends up saving the puppies’ lives, she finally relents.

This great film is filled with moments of humor, and your whole family will enjoy watching the escapades of all the dogs, the owners, and the bewildered neighborhood in this unrated film.
