Today I was behind a learner driver on the way into town. This learner was belting down the highway at 100 kilometers an hour, which is the signposted speed. Except learners are not allowed to go over 80 kilometers per hour. If he’d read and taken notice of his rule book he would have known that rule.
Maybe he did know and simply chose to ignore it, because when we got to roadwork where the speed limit was signposted as 80kph he dropped his speed to 90kph. When it dropped to 60kph he slowed to around 70kph.
It made me think about each of us in the Christian life. We have the Bible which is our guidebook for living, but how often do we choose to not read it? So, we don’t know what God requires. Or we read it but choose to take no notice of what it says.
In so many newspapers and magazines I see advertisements for life coaches. It seems to becoming big business these days. Christians already have a life coach. All we have to do is look at Jesus. If we want to see what the perfect Christian life looks like, we have only to look at Jesus at what he said and what he did.
Years ago when I was a new Christian I bought a book called ‘In His Steps’. The novel explores the lives of a pastor and several parishioners, as they set out on a year long experience of Christian living. Their motto in each situation became
‘What would Jesus do?’ That book was first published in 1897 by a minister with the idea of reading it to his congregation as a result of his shock at the indifference of the Christian community.
In 1976 Marti Hefley wrote ‘In His Steps Today,’ telling the story of a group of 20th century Christians who decided to live it out. I’m thinking maybe it’s time I revisited those books.
Better still each of us could simply study our life manual more closely and listen to our life coach, Jesus. I know we’d find the answers about to how to live an effective Christian life in the Bible.
