The Ward Christmas Party- An Idea

For some reason, the Bishop thinks I should be the one to head up the ward Christmas party this year. Why? I’m not sure, but I guess I should be happy that he has the confidence in me to do it. I’ve never planned anything like this before, and I’m a little nervous. But, alas, I have an idea and he approved it, so we are ready to start planning.

I live in UT, so you would think I live in a bustling, large ward full of many cute little families, and lots of members. Not really. Our ward is small. Established back in the early 1900’s, it’s been around a long time, but many members have moved on to the ‘burbs. On my street, there are only about 5 houses with members of the church. So, our ward is small. I think the Bishop wanted something a little different than what’s been done before in their ward. Since I’ve only been in the ward a few months, maybe that’s why I got the assignment?

We are going to have a service oriented Christmas party. We are going to start with a traditional sit down dinner, but it is after dinner where we will change things up a bit. After dinner, we will prepare a cute little christmas decoration and iced sugar cookies to hand out in the neighborhood as we go caroling! This is a tradition that my family always did as a child that I loved. Since our neighborhood is predominately made up of non-members, we are going to hand out little treats to our neighbors as we carol as a way to reach out to others in our neighborhood. We will also invite those people in our neighborhood to join us as we carol. For those older people in our ward that may not want to brave the cold weather and carol, we will have a service project like tying a quilt for them to do back at the church while we are out caroling.

After we carol, and hand out good cheer, we will return to the church where we will warm up with hot chocolate, and the kids will get to visit with Santa. There are a lot of details to work out still, but I am confident that it will be fun. So far, it’s just an idea, but as we get closer, I’ll share more ideas and thoughts on planning this event that comes with so much anticipation!
