Yesterday we looked at the gravity with which God views astrology, sorcery, fortunetelling and such. Does that mean God can never bring a person out of such a background? No it does not! Like any other sin, God will forgive if the person truly repents and puts their trust in the Lord Jesus.
The bible sites an example in Acts 16:16 where Paul, in the name of Jesus, rescued a slave girl from the practice of divination and fortunetelling, Acts 16:16-18
More recently it was the case in Australia, where God rescued Merryanne Sumner from new age practices that included Ekankar, Buddhism ,Transcendental Meditation, consulting clairvoyants, supposed past-life regression, numerology, tarot and a host of other practices, until God revealed to her this was ‘abhorrent to Him.’ At which point she cried out to God for help.
The Holy Spirit directed her to an Anglican church. Merryanne became involved in a Know Your Bible class, which was studying the book of Amos where she was challenged by what she learned. It took a while but God eventually convicted her of her need for Jesus and to give up all the practices she had been involved in.
After classes at Mary Andrews College, she was asked by her pastor to help with pastoral work. God has led her out of the darkness of these other wrong avenues and into the light so she is now able to help others. In her own words ‘putting my trust in God and His Word gives me clear guidelines to follow in life.’
Those same guidelines are available to us. If you have been tempted in the past or are still dabbling with any of these practices, look at what God’s Word has to say about these practices and then make your choice. You cannot serve the Lord God and continue to dabble in these practices. They are not fun pastimes but dangerous.
However, if a person truly repents and turns away from them as those in Acts 19:19 did, to put their trust in the Lord Jesus and His Word, God will accept them and can use them to help others.
