What is a wet bar and how is it different from a dry one? Do you have to be of a certain age to be near it? Read on for some watery facts.
A wet bar is used for mixing alcoholic and other types of beverages in the privacy of one’s home. If you entertain often, a wet bar is a convenient and not too expensive enhancement to your home. In order to make it possible to mix drinks, a wet bar must contain a flat counter-like surface on which beverages and glasses can be placed. It also needs a sink with running water, which can be utilized for cleaning the glassware or for adding water to drinks as needed.
The sink in a wet bar can be wet or dry, and here we go about swimming again. A wet one has plumbing lines attached to it in order to provide running water. If the wet bar has a dry sink, that means it is not attached to the plumbing and you don’t have to worry about swimming or being over age. A dry sink can still be useful; you can fill it with ice, for example, to keep on hand for beverages that need a quick chilling.
Most wet bars contain a recessed area near the sink, which is usually reserved for installing a small refrigerator. Beneath the counter there is also a storage area, which provides a place to put bottles of liquor and glassware. Wet bar cabinets are usually designed so that they open and close and contain adjustable shelving, which is convenient when dealing with different sized bottles, glasses and rambunctious guests who won’t behave.
The standard wet bar is made out of wood with laminated counters that easily pick up spills. Stainless steel is also sometimes used, but it is generally much more expensive. Some companies even sell wet bar kits for the handier among us (not I), making it easy for some to build his or her own “dream” wet bar.
