I just want to go on record as saying that I am NOT a big fan of the quota. One of the chief motivators for working independently and running my own home business is to not have to work at someone else’s speed or meet externally-set quotas. But, I have found in chatting with other home business owners, that some individuals do work well with quotas, and for those people who are doing direct sales (working with a parent company as an independent contractor), quotas do play a role in their home-based businesses.
If you work with quotas–whether self-imposed or required from some outside entity–the first, important step is to make sure that you have a clearly defined quota system and that you, personally both understand and can work within the quota system that is established. Many of us home-business folks have a great many variables that affect our business time and output. If we have to adhere to strict quotas, the flexibility of working from home and family life can be either a hindrance or a help. Having a very well-defined, documented agreement will help to alleviate a lot of heartache and headache.
If you are motivated by having a quota, then it can be an element that keeps you focused and working in your home business–but make sure your family understands the restrictions and expectations of your work life too. This way you can turn your family members into supporters and not obstacles. They may be encouraging and allow you to make your quota early, so you’ll have more time to spend on other things. But, they will need to understand what you are actually dealing with.
With quotas, make sure you keep accurate records, and negotiate in advance if you need any sort of flexibility (the birth of a baby, an illness, etc.). While there may not be much flexibility in your particular situation–early negotiation can create some flexibility that might not otherwise exist.
