The following theme ideas can be used for boys’ room, girls’ rooms, or playrooms. These themes make cute, fun rooms that any child will enjoy.
Art Studio
Turn a child’s space into an art studio, complete with easel and art supplies. Place the easel near a window if possible, to give your artist plenty of natural lighting and perhaps some inspiration from the view. To protect flooring from paint and other messy art supplies, make a “rug” from a remnant of vinyl flooring material or a piece of vinyl fabric. Turn the piece over, draw a cool design on the back, cut it out, and attach it to a non-stick backing. Make a gallery wall and hang up your child’s masterpieces, adding accent lights over his or her favorite pieces. You can find plug in lighting rather than going to the effort and expense of hardwiring. Simply paint the cords the same color as the wall so they won’t stand out (making sure they’re fully dry before plugging them in).
Learn and Play Room
Give your child a cute bedroom or playroom and help him or her learn at the same time. Start with an ABC/123 border. You can find the same designs as used in classrooms at teachers’ supply outlets, such as the Alphabet Kids set. Also, look in the school supply section of the local super center. Since many of these designs are intended for bulletin boards, you may need two sets to create a border around the entire room, or you may want to simply treat one or two walls. You can also make your own border by simply painting or printing out letters in upper and lower case. Beneath them, hang shelves and fill them with items that begin with the letters of the alphabet. Place a stuffed alligator or a toy apple below the A, a bear below the B, etc. Place flash cards in frames to use as artwork, or cut out geometric shapes in bright colors and frame them to help with learning shapes. Add a globe someplace in the room, and include a chalkboard or paint closet doors with chalkboard paint.
