Personally, I think theme rooms tend to be a little overrated. They also tend to be as overdone as they are overrated. However, I currently find myself designing a theme room for my two younger girls. It involves dolphins and blending shades of blue and purple together in order to keep both of them happy.
It is a lot of fun. I’m enjoying shopping for items to go into the space. Even though it’s going to take a while (I have to collect a few things here and there due to budget), I’m anxious to get started. If the end result is even nearly as good as the pictures I have in my mind, it’s going to be an enchanting space.
I guess theme rooms work better for kids, if you ask me. I just don’t think I’d be comfortable with a theme in my master bedroom or in my living room. Kid’s rooms and bathrooms are about as much as I can handle.
I have seen some really great theme rooms, but they’re just not my taste. I tend to be more eclectic and mix and match things that I like. I tend to use neutral backdrops so I can change the contents of the space frequently. I get bored easily, and maybe that’s part of the problem.
It also has to do with practicality. I can’t justify spending a lot of money to create a theme room, when I know I’ll tire of it quickly, the fad will die quickly, and I will have to redo it right away. As much as I enjoy redecorating, I like it to last for a while. I like to enjoy the fruits of my labors for a while before I feel the need to change it again.
Do you have theme rooms in your home? Have you ever had one? Are you considering one? I’d love to hear your feedback and ideas.
