During a recent visit to my aunt and uncle’s, I popped into my 11-year-old cousin’s room and noticed big black X’s on each day of his calendar. It could only mean one thing: the countdown to summer vacation had begun. That of course means I don’t have much time to finish this vacation blog. So, here we go…part two of “Theme Vacations.” Part one covered everything from professional football training camps to outlet malls. The idea is to pick a central theme and plan your trip accordingly. We continue the list with:
Farmers’ Markets—From pickled beets to smoked meats and, of course, fresh produce; summer’s bounty is on display at Farmers’ Markets across the country. It is my mother’s dream to traverse the nation and visit as many Farmers’ Markets as possible. But even if you don’t share this desire, you may still consider a trip to a local Farmers’ Market. It’s a great place for kids to learn about the fruits of one’s labor (displayed outside the traditional supermarket setting). To find a Farmers’ Market in your area visit: www.farmersmarket.net.
Lakes–Minnesota is known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” Which is not to say that you should visit every one. My suggestion is to map out a trip that allows you to visit as many different lakes as possible (within your budgeted time frame). It doesn’t have to be Minnesota’s lakes, pick a state (or states) look at camping options, nearby attractions and other accommodations. If you or your children are avid anglers than look for lakes that offer the greatest variety of fish and research the time of day that provides the best opportunity to reel in that “big one.” Another option for families with boats: look for lakes that will accommodate your craft and offer space for activities including water-skiing or tubing.
Food Festivals—This idea combines two of my passions: traveling and eating. If I won the lottery and was relinquished of all my financial obligations I would take an entire summer and devote it to a cross-country food festival binge. Summer is prime time for local food festivals. In practically every state in the nation you will find festivals that celebrate regional fare. For example, in June alone, Wisconsin hosts a Cheese Festival, a Strawberry Festival, a Hamburger Festival, and a Mustard Festival.
