There’s a Need – So What?

null
In my last blog we looked at how God wants workers not shirkers. So you’ve been asked by someone in your church or community to take on an area of ministry or service. Should you dive right in, even if you’re not sure about it, because you have been asked and because there is a need? I know some churches would advocate that if there is a need you should fill it. But and as far as I’m concerned it’s a big BUT…

Never mind what someone else thinks you should be doing, is it what God wants you to do? Is it what God is calling you to do?

If someone else has identified a skill or talent you have and a way to utilize that skill of talent it may be that God is calling you to do it. It might also be that they are only seeing the need and are desperate for someone – anyone, to fill that need. So, how do you know if this is something you should take on? Is the fact there’s a need enough?

I don’t believe so. In my Christian life I have learned never to take on a role of service or area of ministry unless I am sure God is calling me to it. So the first thing I do when asked to take on something, is say I will pray about it and get back to them with an answer.

The Lord Jesus wants us to follow Him. This is what He called the first disciples to do. It is what He calls us to do too – to follow, not to go running off halfcocked, running ahead of him.

He promises to guide Psalm 48:14, (which just happened to be my psalm for the day). Here are some others about God’s guidance, Psalm 23:3, Psalm 25:9,, Psalm 78:14,53, Psalm 107:30. He promises to lead us, John 10:3. He also goes before us, John 10:4.

So, the first step is to pray about it, then to look for and expect God’s clear direction. Once we get that we need to go forward in faith trusting God to provide all we need to do the job He has called is to. And he will!
