This year, the forty-third annual Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree will take place on June 8, June 9, and June 10. There will also be a Pre-Event Day that takes place on June 7, 2012. There will be more happening on Day Two of the event than I can list here. These are just a few of events and classes that I think would be interesting.
The Pre-Event Day, and Day One of the Southern California Genealogical Society SCGS Jamboree are packed with interesting and exciting things for genealogists to check out. Day Two is just as full.
The SCGS has posted a schedule that shows quite a bit about the things that will be happening. There is the potential that some of it could change between now and June.
There will be a special event presented by Curt B. Witcher, MLS, FUGA, IGSF, that is called “And the Rockets’ Red Glare: Online Resources for War of 1812 Research”. This has been listed as a Breakfast event. 2012 is the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. This presentation will show you strategies for finding and using online resources to do your genealogy work related to the War of 1812. This includes the new Fold3 website.
This presentation will include an update on the status of the work being done by NARA and the Federation of Genealogical Societies. They are working to digitize the pension files from the War of 1812.
Dennis Northcott will hold a class called “Grand Army of the Republic, Loyal Legion, and other Civil War Union Veterans Associations”. The Grand Army of the Republic is the largest Union Civil War veterans association. This class will teach you about their valuable genealogical records, the records of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion, and other associations.
Curt B. Wilcher, MLS, FUGA, IGSF, will hold a class called “Using Military Records for Genealogical Research”. He will discuss the five types of military records and where you can find them. He will talk about the typical data found in the records, and gives details about other “minor” military records.
Thomas MacEntee will host a panel discussion called “Blogger Summit Panel #1 Blog Beginner to Reader to Blogger in 60 Minutes”. Discover what a blog is. Learn how to read blogs to find genealogy leads. Watch how easy it is to create a blog in under five minutes!
Megan Smolenyak will hold a class called “Reverse Genealogy: Techniques for Finding Your Lost Loved Ones”. This presentation covers proven techniques for tracing 20th and 21st century friends and relatives, from the past to the present. These techniques require you to be part genealogist and part private investigator.
These are just a few of the events, classes, and discussions that will be happening on Day Two of the SCGS Jamboree. I picked some of the ones that I thought would be the most interesting. Your selections may vary. I recommend reading over the full schedule if you would like more information.
