Things to Clean Now and How to Clean Them

The fall weather signals that it is time to get at least three things cleaned up before the winter: your window air conditioners, your ceiling fans and your grill. Get a head start to cleaning these items, so you won’t have to worry about them later.

The Window Air Conditioners

Fickle fall weather may mean that you will be turning the air conditioners on a few more times, depending on where you live. That is okay, you can still clean them now and use them a few times before you have to store them away.

Air conditioners really need to be cleaned because if they are dirty, they will spew grime, dirt and even mold into the air, which is not healthy. Believe me, I know. We had a problem where mold developed.

To clean the unit, first remove the filter. Depending on the type of filter, you can either wash it in warm soapy water or or use an old toothbrush to brush at the dust and grime.

Next vacuum the fins. Use a special air conditioner cleaner if needed.

The Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans that have too much dirt on them can become off balanced and inefficient. You can use your ceiling fans in both summer and winter, just reverse the blades.

You can try using a vacuum with a long hose to remove surface dust and grime. For really dirty ceiling fan blades, you can use a microfiber cloth to clean them.

If the ceiling fans are still off balance after cleaning, buy a balancing kit and follow the directions.

The Grill

You want to keep your grill clean so the ash doesn’t wind up getting into your food. A dirty grill could also attract wild animals looking for food during the winter months.

If you have a gas grill, you want to make sure that you first disconnect the the gas tank or line. Next, lay out a tarp for the grates, which can be cleaned with oven cleaner (use gloves). Rinse the grates with a garden hose.

Next, empty out the base of the grill of ash and coal. You can clean the burner on a gas grill with a damp rag.
