Things to Do When You Are Overdue

With three of my four pregnancies, my due date passed with no baby. Two of my girls were five days late. My son was eight days past his due date when he decided to join the family. The days after the due date are the longest and slowest days of my entire life. Here’s a fun list of things to do when you are overdue.

Whatever you do, try not to spend all your time cleaning the house. A certain amount of “nesting” is normal in the days and weeks before the baby is born. The urge to clean everything in sight can be strong, but resist it. You need to spend time relaxing and save your energy for labor.

Pamper yourself with a day at the spa. Splurge for the full package, including a prenatal massage, facial, hair and nails. When the baby arrives, your needs will be put on the back burner. This is the perfect time for you to relax and enjoy being pampered. Bring your best friend or sister for a relaxing girl’s day out.

If you don’t want to do a whole day of beauty, get a hair cut or have your nails done. This may be your last opportunity for a little while, so enjoy it. A new hair cut and waxed eyebrows will look great when you are holding your little bundle in countless photographs.

Spend some one on one time with your older child, or children. When the baby arrives, he will need a lot of attention. This is the perfect opportunity to give your older baby extra attention and enjoy the time you have together. When we were waiting for our last baby, I took the girls to the lake every day. They liked to play in the water and the sand. I knew we wouldn’t get there as often after the baby came, so I made it a priority while we were waiting for him.

Go out to lunch and shopping with a friend. An afternoon of lunch and shopping is nearly impossible with a newborn. You will be able to relax and enjoy lunch and some adult conversation. Soon, this will be something you treasure, believe me! Pick up a cute outfit for the baby or some lotion and aromatherapy oils for you.

Go on a date your husband. Go to your favorite restaurant or that new place you’ve been dying to try. Eating out with babies is not impossible; I’ve done it with all of our babies. However, there is something to be said for eating a meal without holding or entertaining a baby at the same time.
