Things You May Need for Your New Home

empty room Moving into a new home or just finding yourself in need of a few things around the house? Here is a list of items that you will probably need after you close on your home.

Window treatments

The law varies by state as to the state of the window treatments. Some states require them to be left with the house, other states require them to be left if they are mounted or custom (venetian blinds and shutters count, curtains do not). Then again, even if they are included, you may not agree with the style.

Sun and Snow

Two big items that you will need for your home, depending on where you live is a lawnmower and some sort of snow removal. You might be able to get away with a shovel, or you may need a snow thrower. In our old home, we could be fined if we didn’t remove the snow on the sidewalks in front of our home within a certain time frame. Also consider getting a garden hose. Beside watering the lawn if needed, it comes in handy for all sort of applications, from filling a kiddie pool to rinsing off the house or walk.

New Locks or Keys

It is always a good idea to change the locks on your home. You don’t know who might have a key to your home, from neighbors to relatives to contractors. If you locks are in good shape, you can always remove them and take them to a hardware store to have them re-keyed. This will save you a little bit on the cost.

Appliances

Chances are that before you close on a home you will know which appliances are staying and which are being taken by the sellers. But, you may not know how well those appliances actually perform, or how long it will be before they need to be replaced. Unless they are brand new, keep appliances in mind for some of the bigger things you may need.
