Thinking About Announcing Your Pregnancy on Turkey Day?

John Milton said, “Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world.” This time of year, those of us who are expecting have abundantly more to be thankful for, and what provokes “transcendent moments of awe” more than bringing a new life into the world? Thanksgiving is one of the few holidays that does not center around gifts, but rather focuses on bringing family together and expressing gratitude for the things in life that matter. I can’t think of a more perfect occasion to share pregnancy news with your family!

The easiest moment to break the news is while everyone is sharing what they are thankful for. Some families do this over a toast and some go around the table. Imagine the reaction when the expecting couple announces, “we are thankful for our growing family!” Or a little less subtle: “We are thankful for a healthy baby due this spring!” If you go this route, you might want to make sure you go last, otherwise your news might distract everyone from listening to others share what they are thankful for.

More fun ways to announce a pregnancy at Thanksgiving:

  • *Wear a fun printed shirt announcing “Turkey for Two”
  • *Set out an extra place setting with a bottle in place of the water or wine glass
  • *Say something like, “I don’t mind if I gain five pounds from eating all this pumpkin pie, I still have at least 25 to gain by May!”
  • *Talk about yourself in plural form at the dinner table. “Who wants more stuffing?” “We do!” or “Could you pass us the potatoes.” Keep it up until someone calls you on it!
  • *Say, “Next year we’ll be bringing more than a dish to pass!”
  • *Pass out “Happy Thanksgiving” greeting cards signed from you “and baby”
  • *Set out a decorative basket as a centerpiece containing the baby food versions of Thanksgiving classics: sweet potato, turkey, green beans, etc. Also include a tiny plate, utensils, and a “Baby’s First Thanksgiving” bib. Tie a card to the basket that says “Thanksgiving 2010”
