Thinking Ahead to the Colder Months

Since this week we had our first official day of fall I am starting to think about the upcoming winter months and how I can best prepare for them with my fitness routine. Walking outdoors will definitely become a thing of the past since I live in Wisconsin. However I could also look at shoveling snow as an alternative.

At any rate, the colder months also tend to bring other unwanted things into the home, like illness. Colds, the sniffles and the flu are sure to hit my home. The thing about getting sick is that I know I will lack the energy to exercise. If that happens I also know myself enough that getting back into it will be a challenge.

So I am going to start preparing myself and planning ahead for those days where I may not be able to get off the couch. First of all, fit living is about keeping illness at bay as much as possible. There are extra steps we can take to build up our immune systems.

One of the routines that I start with my children and myself in the fall is that we begin taking Vitamin C and Echinacea. Both help to build up our immune systems and fight off illness. We take these on a daily basis and I also make sure that we have orange juice available at all times.

While we can take our supplements to help keep sickness at bay it is still likely to hit. If there is one thing I have learned over the years is that it does no good to push yourself too hard.

As a mom I definitely don’t like to get out of my routine and spend time resting when I am sick. I want to keep moving. But I am going to make a pledge to myself this year that when I do get sick, I will allow myself the opportunity to rest.

I have seen it happen in the past that when I push myself, I don’t get better or I begin to feel worse. So I figure I will get better faster if I allow myself the time to recuperate. Sure, I may not be able to exercise but I can choose to eat healthier during this time. I will also make sure that when I do get back to my exercise routine I do it slowly.

The colder months will be here before you know it and changes to our fitness routine are sure to happen. Begin planning now and thinking ahead of ways that you can maintain fit living.
