Third Grade Science Curriclum Part 3

In Part 1 of and Part 2 Third grade Science Curriculum, I discussed several topic that you need to cover while homeschooling in third grade, especially if you want to keep in line with what is being taught nationally. Here the third and final installment of Third Grade Science curriculum.

Gravity: Using the timing of a space shuttle flight, follow the events of the astronauts as well as what it is like to be in space. Use this opportunity to also discuss gravity. In addition read about the discovery of gravity by Isaac Newton.

Light and color: This is a great topic for more science experiments. A book like Dazzling Projects with Light and Color will help.

Energy and its sources: Experiments are also a great way to teach about energy. A great book that will also be helpful is Eyewitness: Energy.

Force and work: There are a couple of really great books that explain force in a fun way. They are Can You Feel the Force and Exploring Forces and Movement.

Machines: Read a simple kid book about machines like Machines at Work and then go out an look at some of these machines close up.

Moon and stars, & Earth satellites: Take advantage of your local planetarium. Go in and view their informational movies, and on nights when there are eclipse, or you can see mars or a constellation clearly, call your planetarium to see if you can come take a look.

Scientific method and scientific inquiry: Scientific method is something that is taught at the beginning of every year in science. Teach the child how to understand these concepts early on and use them to discuss every topic you discover. You can find lesson plans and terminology for this online.

If taking my advice on every single top sounds a bit daunting, just pick a handful and do those. Other topics you can investigate online using a resource like The Kingfisher Science Encyclopedia.
