This Week in History – June, 1993

It was 15 years ago, but it seems like only yesterday. Yes, we are going back to this week in June 1993 to find out what was happening in our world:

In national news, Nutri-System was forced to claim bankruptcy. Because of that, the company had to close 283 stores and lay off 1,800 employees. The White House began receiving email via this crazy invention called the Internet. By the end of this week, the Montreal Canadiens will have won their 24th Stanley Cup after defeating the Los Angeles Kings. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland broke ground and was expected to be completed within two years.

In celebrity news, Mariah Carey, then 23 years old, married Sony Music president Tommy Mottola (20 years her senior). Katie Couric held the first in-depth interview with first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton while Connie Chung began co-anchoring the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather. Country music star Conway Twitty passed away due to complications from stomach surgery. Twitty, age 59, had great success in the country music industry, having had over 40 #1 hits.

What books could you find on the bestseller list? You could pick up “The Bridges of Madison County” by Robert James Waller, “Like Water for Chocolate” by Laura Esquivel, “The Client” by John Grisham, or “The Way Things Ought To Be” by Rush Limbaugh.

What was on television? Well, if you turned on the boob tube on a Saturday night, you could watch Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman on CBS, Mad About You on NBC, or The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles on ABC.

If you didn’t feel like watching television, but wanted to take in a movie, you might go to see Cliffhanger with Sylvester Stallone, Made in America with Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Danson, Menace II Society, or Dragon, The Bruce Lee Story.

If you turned on the radio, you would probably hear “That’s the Way” by Janet Jackson, “Have I Told You Lately” by Rod Stewart, or “Show Me Love” by Robin S. The Bodyguard soundtrack, which featured Whitney Houston belting out “I Will Always Love You,” was one of the top albums along with Breathless by Kenny G and The Chronic by Dr. Dre.
