Tonight, the “World Series of Pop Culture” returns to VH1. In case you haven’t seen it, the “World Series of Pop Culture” is a game show tournament that features – what else? – pop culture questions.
Teams compete against each other for the final prize – $250,000! The show is made up of rounds. Each team must send one player and he or she must attempt to answer all the questions in that round. What type of categories do they have? Stuff that I consider fun like “Family TV,” “1980s Teen Comedy Films,” “Tom Cruise Movies,” “1990s Lyrics,” “Fictional Locales,” and “TV Teen Dramas.” The final question last year came down to a reference from “The Cosby Show.” It asked what college Denise Huxtable attended. Apparently, these guys never watched “A Different World” because neither player could answer that she went to Hillman College. Ah, the diseases I could probably cure if my head was not filled with such useless information as this!
Also appearing this week are two new games shows about song lyrics that I am very excited about. I have two pet peeves – misspelled words and singing the wrong song lyrics. “Excuse me while I kiss this guy” – no, no, no, it’s “Excuse me while I kiss the sky!”
“Don’t Forget the Lyrics” starts this Wednesday on Fox at 9:30 EST. Wayne Brady hosts this show that has contestants choosing songs from different genres, decades, and artists to see if they know the correct lyrics. If they answer 9 songs in a row correctly, they then get one final song (a #1 hit) and if they correctly guess the missing lyrics, they win $1 million dollars!
“The Singing Bee” premieres Tuesday night on NBC at 9:30 EST. Joey Fatone hosts this show with the same premise – you don’t have to sing well, just sing the right words! So if you love songs and think you know the lyrics, you may want to tune into one or both of these shows. I know I will be watching!
