Thoughts to Ponder When Returning to College

I love to look over the forum threads in all of the various categories. Often these threads can inspire me to write.

A recent thread that I noticed was about a very important educational and career decision. The decision was to either take a less stressful and easier road of LPN or a more difficult and more stressful road to RN.

While these decisions can only be made by the individual and by the heart, it is important to keep a reality check when returning to school.

Many women are now returning to school after having children. A lot of women are being a brand new profession after years of being a stay at home mom.

I admire these women. I obtained my master’s degree after having a baby. College is much easier before children and before marriage.

While I would never discourage anyone to not chase their dreams, I think that is important to your family and to your health to examine your life carefully before making such strict educational commitments.

Below I have listed some ideas that may need to be pondered before deciding which road to take.

How much time am I willing to give to my education? Be certain that you do not only focus on class time. Factor in study time also. When creating your class schedule do not exceed your set time.

Am I okay with missing special events? If your children are very active in sports and have a full schedule, make certain that you are at peace with yourself and your children on missing a few. You should not have to sit in class and feel guilty or worried about missing out on a few practices. If so, load up on hours during off seasons and take a break during playing seasons.

How much help do I have at home? Be realistic when thinking about your husband. It is nice to think that he will be supportive and help out with his end of the bargain, but will he? You know him, do not expect miracles to happen on his end.
