Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul: it conjures images of family, warm eyes and wet noses, and heartwarming stories about our furry family members. But right now it’s the opposite of wholesome; last week Diamond Pet Foods issued a recall of certain lots of their Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul adult dog food due to a Salmonella infection.
The information for the potentially affected bags is as follows, including production codes and expiration dates:
* Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul 35 lb. CLF0102B31XCW 27/JAN/2013, CLF0102B32XWR 28/JAN/2013
* Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Adult Light Formula 35 lb. CLF0102B31XCW 28/JAN/2013
* Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul 6lb. CLF0102B3XALW 28/JAN/2013
This follows an earlier recall from the beginning of April on other Diamond Pet food products. Those affected were:

If you think you have purchased any of the affected products stop feeding them to your dog. Check the bag size, product code, and expiration date. If you have a match, don’t give it to your dog. You can get rid of the bag, or if you have questions or would like a refund contact Diamond Pet Foods at 800-442-0402, 8 am – 6 pm EST, Monday through Friday. Luckily there haven’t yet been any reports of dogs sickened by the food. The recall was issued voluntarily by Diamond Pet Foods, which means they noticed the problem while doing testing in their own plants. Still, I have to say that this doesn’t make Diamond look very good: three recalls in the span of just about a month? I don’t feed my pets any foods by them and though I didn’t have any plans of switching, if I ever do I doubt it will be to any of these products.
Pets exhibiting signs of Salmonella poisoning will be lethargic, and exhibit vomiting and diarrhea. Less severe symptoms include decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Even if a pet is only mildly infected by Salmonella it can be a carrier and spread it to others, including humans, so if your pet exhibits any symptoms contact your veterinarian.
If you came into direct contact with a potentially affected bag of pet food, especially if you touched the food directly and did not thoroughly wash your hands after, it’s possible you contracted Salmonella as well. Symptoms are similar to those for animals: nausea, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and urinary tract issues. Contact your doctor if you start displaying any of these symptoms after coming into contact with affected food.
