Three Dreaded Letters: PMS

It’s not a subject most people like to discuss, but PMS or Pre Menstrual Syndrome can wreak havoc on relationships, especially when it is not recognized. Despite what many people seem to think, hormonal fluctuations throughout a woman’s cycle can be as hard on her as they seem to be on the people in her life.

Yes, PMS is Real

Too often people see PMS as being “all in her head,” but it’s not. Hormonal changes can cause everything from cravings and fatigue to mild discomfort or a good deal of pain. There is often bloating and irritability, and a woman may suffer from mild to intense mood swings. While it may seem as if she’s “getting away with something using hormones as an excuse,” women do not enjoy bouts of PMS.

There is Some Relief Available

For mild cases, preparations like Pamprin or Midol make take the edge off and get you through the day. Vitamins may also help (ask your doctor). These and other over the counter products can help relieve minor pain, bloating, and may help you relax a little. They don’t do anything for cravings, fatigue, intense mood swings or heavy pain. If these medications don’t do much for you, try some of these options:

  • Moderate exercise can help lift your mood
  • Avoid skipping meals to keep cravings in check
  • Try to get more rest, even if it’s just a nap
  • Limit caffeine to help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety
  • Watch the amount of salt you consume, especially if you are bloated

If the above (or a combination of them) do not work for you, speak with your healthcare provider for advice. You may need a prescription. If you suffer from other conditions, be sure to tell your doctor about them, as they may exacerbate PMS. Your doctor may also test for other problems.

Ask your spouse for understanding and support when you’re suffering from PMS. Also, if you become upset, try to understand that things will probably seem much different in a day or so. Consider putting off things that can wait until you’re feeling more like yourself. Recognizing and understanding PMS can help diminish the negative effects.
