Do you want to take 30-50 percent off of the cost of your groceries? Who couldn’t use that, right? Here are three easy ways that you can do just that. Slash your grocery bill today!
Buy basic and bulk
To save money on your groceries, buy them in bulk and in their basic form. For example, you know those little convenient oatmeal packets? Buy a large container of oatmeal instead. You can flavor and sweeten it yourself, and even parcel it out to individual servings if needed.
You’ll really clean up when you buy your staple food in bulk. Rice, eggs and cereal will all cost much less in larger quantities. You can also freeze extra portions, including shredded cheese for cooking, milk, flour and more.
Use it up
The average family throws away 25 percent of their groceries! This is because the groceries either go bad or these families have leftovers that they never use. Don’t be one of these families. Only buy the amount of produce that you can use in the week, and incorporate leftovers into your regular meals. Even small bits of leftovers can be used as pizza toppings, thrown into soups and sauces or made into fajitas or omelets for a “free” meal.
Make meatless meals
Meat accounts for a large portion of the budget when it comes to cost. By substituting other protein sources, such as beans and offering a couple of meatless meals in the week, such as pasta dishes, you can automatically save money. Not ready to go completely meatless? Cut down on the amount of meat in a recipe by replacing some of it with TVP, a good meat substitute that works well in sauces and casseroles. it takes on the flavor of whatever it is cooked in and adds bulk and texture (as well as protein).
