The spring and the summer are wonderful seasons for taking advantage of the bounty of beautiful flowers. Liven up your home and your mood, too, with these three new ways to incorporate flowers into your home.
In the Kitchen
Take advantage of edible flowers to do something unexpected that feels like luxury. Don’t worry about needing a cookbook or a complicate guide to flowers. Simply frost some cupcakes and then add delicate edible rose petals to top, arranging them in a natural flower pattern. A gumdrop can serve as the center. Sprinkle some colored sugar on top of the petals for extra glamour. This idea was spotted in Better Homes and Gardens Magazine (BH&G).
Edible flowers can be purchased in several places. If you have Whole Foods grocery store, that would be your easiest source. You can also spot them in some other grocery stores in the herb section. A bakery supply store may also have the edible rose petals.
In the Dining Room
The idea of posies is a Victorian one, where young girls and sometimes their beaus would make little bundles of flowers to be carried or worn on their clothing. You can dress up your table with little posies of flowers placed elegantly on your plates or napkins at your place settings. Find the smallest of flowers and bundle them up with greenery. Fresh herbs are small and bright enough to do the trick. You can also attach the posies to ribbon so they can be worn by your female guests as corsages on their wrists. Attach pins to use the posies on clothing.
In the Backyard
Create a wonderful bit of atmosphere when you combine flowers with candles. Okay, so the concept isn’t exactly new, but you can give it a new twist. Get a nice large container and fill it about a quarter of the way with sand. You can use plain play sand that is available in home improvement and toy stores, or colored sand that is available in craft stores. Stick taper candles in the sand and alternate them with flowers. The flowers should be stuck in the sand so the blooms rest against the sand and the stems don’t show. BH&G recommends that you keep the sand moist or use floral picks to make the blooms last longer. This would be a fun idea for the fourth of July.
